Recent climate and limnology changes in Lake Tanganyika

چکیده

The Bujumbura meteorological station lies at the northern end of the lake (3.32° S, 29.32° E), while the Mbala station is situated 40 km from the southern end (8.85° S, 31.33° E). Both stations are part of the World Meteorological Organisation network. The lake temperature was measured with a CTD12+ instrument (accuracy ±0.01 °C) and an automatic ANDERAA thermistor string installed in the south of the lake (accuracy ±0.1 °C). DO was measured with a Yellow Springs Instrument equipped with a submersible stirrer. Accuracy was ±0.01 mg/L DO. Transparency was measured with a standard secchi disk.

Nutrient dynamics of Lake Tanganyika

The large and productive fishery of Lake Tanganyika is an important source of income and nutrition for the surrounding areas. This fishery, based primarily on pelagic clupeids (Kiswahili: dagaa), is very productive, and provides a readily available, nutritious, and inexpensive source of protein to the rapidly growing human populations in this area. The regional importance of the Lake Tanganyika...

Century-Long Warming Trends in the Upper Water Column of Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika, the deepest and most voluminous lake in Africa, has warmed over the last century in response to climate change. Separate analyses of surface warming rates estimated from in situ instruments, satellites, and a paleolimnological temperature proxy (TEX86) disagree, leaving uncertainty about the thermal sensitivity of Lake Tanganyika to climate change. Here, we use a comprehensive ...

Lakes as sentinels of climate change.

While there is a general sense that lakes can act as sentinels of climate change, their efficacy has not been thoroughly analyzed. We identified the key response variables within a lake that act as indicators of the effects of climate change on both the lake and the catchment. These variables reflect a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological responses to climate. However, the efficacy ...

Manganese content records seasonal upwelling in Lake Tanganyika mussels

Biogenic productivity of Lake Tanganyika is highly dependent on seasonal upwellings of cold, oxygendepleted, nutrient-rich deep waters. We investigated the shell of freshwater bivalve Pleiodon spekii as a geochemical archive of these periodic hydrological changes tuned by the monsoon regime. The results of a three-year-long limnological and geochemical survey of the coastal waters performed on ...

Ecological consequences of a century of warming in Lake Tanganyika.

Deep tropical lakes are excellent climate monitors because annual mixing is shallow and flushing rates are low, allowing heat to accumulate during climatic warming. We describe effects of warming on Lake Tanganyika: A sharpened density gradient has slowed vertical mixing and reduced primary production. Increased warming rates during the coming century may continue to slow mixing and further red...
